History of Bertucci’s Restaurant
The inspiration for Bertucci’s originated in the mind of an ice cream shop owner named Joey Crugnale when he visited his grandmother’s home in Italy. He fell in love with his grandmother’s kitchen in Italy which became the backbone of his own restaurant. In the year 1981, he set up his first restaurant named Bertucci’s Brick Oven Pizzeria in Somerville, Massachusetts. This restaurant had amazing interior with a custom built brick oven and a place for an ancient Roman ball sport called the bocce court in the basement to give the restaurant a fun filled, family like feel. The restaurant harboured fresh ingredients and used those to create their signature pizzas that is still winning the hearts of the present day folks. However, this was just the beginning of the culinary and entrepreneurial adventure of Joey Crugnale. In the next 15 years, his restaurant proliferated in all of US with over 100 restaurants in Massachusetts, Florida, Chicago and many other states. It also gained its place in America’s top 10 restaurants in USA Today which reflects the success of this brick oven restaurant among the food and restaurant ventures. 2011 was the 30th anniversary of Bertucci’s that was celebrated with huge fun and frolic by reintroducing some of the old dishes from their earlier menus. To celebrate the glory of brick ovens, Bertucci’s opened 2 ovens only restaurant in Shrewsbury, Massachusetts where the ovens are the only medium of cooking still offering a variety of dishes.
