History of Benihana Restaurant
Benihana came into existence in the year 1964 in the city of skyscrapers, the New York City. It was founded by a very young 25 year old man named Hiroaki ‘Rocky’ Aoki. Aoki was a professional wrestler who qualified for 1960 Summer Olympics but could not attend it due to some personal reasons. Previously he had worked as an ice cream truck driver in Harlem and managed to earn around $10000 with which he opened up Benihana which translated to red Safflower that was also the name of the coffee shop his parents owned back in Tokyo. His restaurant came up with a brilliant brave concept to serve food directly by the chef who would prepare meal right in front of the guests in an entertaining way. It was attended by some of the biggest celebrities of the time, Beatles and Muhammad Ali later around 1965. Aoki again opened up a new restaurant which was bigger and better than the previous ones in terms of ambience and privacy. Later he began expanding his restaurant in other places as well like Chicago. Benihana went public in 1982 with its president Joel Schwartz. Though some of the restaurants were still under the private ownership of Aoki.Benihana Restaurants became Benihana Inc. by incorporating all the restaurants of Benihana in 1995. The company then acquired RA Sushi and Haru Sushi restaurants which happily incorporated the style of Benihana.
